Black Hawk Trounces Newman Catholic, One Win from 4th Straight Title

Unless you have been living under a rock you know this is obviously not a serious post….but here is how we think it would have happened.

Semifinal: #1 Black Hawk (26-0) vs #4 Newman Catholic (22-4) 9:05a

ASHWAUBENON — After a week delay, due to the coronavirus scare, the 2020 WIAA Girls State Tournament is back!

Seniors Hannah Butler and Natalie Leuzinger ended their last three basketball seasons by raising a state championship trophy at the Resch Center. Thanks to efficient outings Friday morning, the duo ensured their Black Hawk tenures have a chance to finish the same way.

Leuzinger (24 points), H. Butler (19) and junior Bailey Butler (17) propelled Black Hawk’s balanced attack in a 79-55 WIAA Division 5 state semifinal win over Newman Catholic (22-5) at the Resch Center.

Black Hawk is one win from a fourth straight state championship and will face the winner of the Clear Lake (26-0) vs Bangor (25-1) for the title at 11:05 a.m. Saturday.

The confidence showed from the start Friday, as Blackhawk used a furious pace in transition to construct an 11-0 run midway through the first quarter.

If Newman Catholic sensed a comeback opportunity midway through the first half, when Blackhawk’s approach slowed and the Fighting Cardinals, twice cut their deficit to eight points, Black Hawk didn’t allow the hope to linger long. Black Hawk led 40-29 at the half.

After halftime Black Hawk came out on motivated…scoring seven unanswered points, including a three-point play from Leuzinger. The run prompted Newman Catholic coach Paul Haag to call a timeout less than a minute into the second half. Black Hawk never looked back after that point, leading by at least 15 points for the remainder of the game.

Black Hawk, which started and finished the regular season at No. 1 in Division 5 poll and have been the heavy favorites to win another gold ball, led by at least 15 points for the majority of the second half, sealing the team’s 54th straight win.
