The Academy of Holy Angels was the site Saturday for the annual Girls Basketball All-Star Series games and featured forty plus of the top class of 2022 players in two highly entertaining All-Star Games. In the first game, Team Stripes took the victory over Team Stars 103-91. Game two saw Team While defeat Team Blue by a score of 116-94. This afternoon was a perfect showcase for the deep talent in the state of Minnesota for this class. Below we recap some of the standouts, news and notes and highlight the newly crowded 2022 Miss Minnesota Basketball.
And the Winner is… AMAYA BATTLE
At halftime of the second All-Star Game, it was made official that the Hopkins Royal and future Minnesota Gopher Amaya Battle was the 2022 Minnesota Miss Basketball. The cool, calm, and collected leader wrapped up her fantastic career with two Minnesota State Championships and over 1000 career points. This award is icing on the cake of a storybook ending to her high school career. Congratulations Amaya!
Game Standouts:
Mallory Heyer
There were times in the game where I was wondering if Mallory knew it was an All-Star game with how hard she was going. She was showing her trademark powerful full court sprints and finished with double-digit rebounds, all while making it look easy.
Amber Scalia
Scalia’s perimeter shot was on full display on Saturday, and she was one of the main reasons why Team White came away with the victory in the second game. She also snagged the second 3-point shooting contest of the afternoon as well.
Callin Hake
Callin was one of driving forces behind her team’s late charge toward a win. She hit multiple perimeter shots a lot with powerful drives into the paint. She did her best to give the Stars team a shot at coming back in the first game.
Desiree Ware
Ware helped her Stripes team slam the door shut on any idea that the Stars team was going to make a comeback. She scored 10 points in a row late in the second half and sealed the victory for her side.
Grace Massaquoi
Grace was one of the most athletic players to take the court on Saturday. She showed off her entertaining rebounds and some of the most creative finishes around the basket of anyone on the court today.
Kassie Caron
Maybe it was because it was in a gym she called home but Kassie sent the crowd away with a reminder just how limitless her 3-point range can be as she drilled multiple long balls from mere steps inside the half court line.
Nia Holloway
You would be hard pressed to find a player that was having more fun that Holloway on this day. You could see she knew and took to heart that a day like this should be celebration and enjoyable. She scored at will in the games and provided multiple entertaining reactions from the bench when her teammates would score.
Lexi Karge
Karge showed out and put-up big numbers both in rebounds and scoring. She showed that you simply can’t teach height and multiple times she scored or two or three small defenders who could do nothing but watch her lay in layup after layup.
A Thank You:
As this event came to a close, it signaled the end of the high school basketball careers for the class of 2022. Over these last three years, you as a class have been the highest of honors to watch and report on. You provided some of exciting moments and I can’t say thank you enough for allowing me to be a small part of your basketball journey. I wish you nothing but the best in the future careers and life.
